Fracture d'internet or French Divide

On my recent trip to Barcelona I stopped for couple of meetings in Paris, where I overheard on the LCI TV channel a discussion about a new French "invention":
After coming up with Fracture Sociale ( Social Divide ) - now my countrymen are talking about Fracture d'Internet !

What is Fracture d'Internet? - Well, we are talking here about broken structure.
The French are arguing that internet will further divide classes into those with internet access and those without, thus breaking traditional structure of social ascension.

I have to say that I am just totally dismayed.
Why would anyone want to popularize internet, that is bringing thousands of people together, as a source of social division?

The new internet that empowers individuals to self produce and self promote themselves ( via blogs, podcasts, Youtube, Flickr, MySpace and many other net services ) is in my opinion the best hope for the youngsters in French suburbs and actually for young people around the world.

Those youngsters have been depending on the system forever- the system that promised jobs and good retirement for life . Now that the system has hickups and it is obvious that jobs are not guaranteed anymore even for the university students in France - the young people are desillusioned. They question whether it makes sense to study at all if at the end nothing is going to happen or change.
So why not relying on social aid while it lasts and let go of trying?

Instead of promoting internet as source of the division- the french government should promote internet as a new source of empowerment. Developing countries such as India show that internet access in itself is an obstacle but not a major one ( many people over there do not have internet access at home, but they can access it via endless street based Internet cafes). Those countries focus on educating their people how internet can change their lives with a very small investment.

I woke up yesterday morning thinking " je refuse" the idea of "fracture d'internet".
As an entrepeneur I am lucky to know that I have a freedom: I have ability to act quickly, I can bring people and ressources around the idea and somehow contribute to a change in the world.

And so the constant rebel in me - pushed me to send couple of emails to my friends entrepreneurs in France telling them that as a Net Generation we have a role to play- we can educate and share our experience to inspire other young people to use great tools we have been all developing and invite them to use them to take control of their lives.

I was happy to see that my french friends were already reacting: They are creating an intitiative called "100 entrepreneurs" that has as a vocation a cycle of visits to local high schools in dissadvantaged areas to share with students how they can use their own interest and hobbies to impact others using internet.

Net Generation Women Co-founders and CEOs

Last week I attended and presented Mobissimo on the Women Technology Cluster Entrepreneur Conference, that took place on October 5 in Mountain View, California.

Other that making Mobissimo known as the best travel search engine that does real time queries of over 171 travel sites in one click for you, I was hoping to find there more young women co-founders and CEOs that run consumer facing companies.

Out of the 300 applicant companies ( co-founded, run or that have a woman on a C level), 26 were retained: 18 in High Technology and 8 in Life Science.
Only 4 of them were internet consumer related:

BrandHabit- a new site that will be launched next month - lets you search cloths by designer brand and helps you locate an internet site and real store where you can find your favorite brand.
Carla Morton, CEO, Founder
http://www.brandhabit.com

myShape run by Louise Wannier, CEO
Instead of having to wade through a sea of choices, you will only see clothing that fits and flatters YOU.
Enter your measurements and personal preferences, let the SHAPEMATCH system match you to cloths
then browse clothing that you can trust will fit and flatter you. The site will be open soon to public.

Ibloks- run by Julia Miller, Founder, President & CEO
Ibloks brings you fully personalized multimedia and game experiences that you can easily share with family and friends. Create your own customized experience using your content or content from Ibloks. Pull together photos, video, and music from your big party last weekend, or customize a game with music and photos. Then, share your creations with the click of a button.

Hoteluxury run by Catherine Arnston, President & CEO

My list of young female co-founders CEOs that run established consumer internet companies will thus not grow substantially, unless perhaps my readers can give me a hand:
So far apart from myself, I have:

Mary Hodder from Dabble
Nina Bianchini from Ning
Elaine and Sandy from Meebo

Anyone else?

A change from your daily grind

\Airsfr0001So apparently American's aren't taking enough time off to recharge.

Well, judging from the length of average trips we see on Mobissimo:
4 days in USA versus on average 7 days for Europeans - that must be true.
But if you are an American- you do not need to stress about it.
Short weekend or even one day away from the job can be very "renewing" for you.

So, for those that feel that under no circumstances they can afford leaving for the long holidays or for those that feel that after the vacation they just took they are even more tired then before- here is a little gem: I got an email few days ago from people behind www.cloud9living.com

You can purchase on this well organized website short 1 day activities in your region: ranging from skydiving, rock climbing, kayaking to spas.

One of the pick for California: Raft the American River
The American River is one of the most popular rafting destinations in the West. With three sections to choose from South Fork, North Fork, and Middle Fork, this river offers something for everyone.
For those looking for a more relaxing trip with a few exhilerating sections of rapids, try the South and Middle Fork. As for the thrill seekers, the North Fork offers spectacular Class IV rapids during your time spent in this Wild and Scenic stretch of river.
So whatever your taste, the American River will certainly satisfy your whitewater needs!
Starts at $175 USD

Seems like a long vacation...

I have not posted in a while...
Many of you have been asking me on which Remote Island I have been hiding lately :)
I wish I had taken this long vacation and very soon I will - Labor Day Weekend comes sooooo incredibly handy to fulfill this plan.

The reality though is that I got excited working on two new tools that Mobissimo, the travel meta search company I co-founded, is developing. So I was more than "plugged" for a while. But the results are worth it: In the coming days we are launching a Virtual Travel Concierge - which will help you locate cheapest flights, hotels and car rentals as well as show you destination information such as weather, photos etc and chat with other users about travel destinations all in one single search.

While working on Mobissimo, I have encountered several interesting "plugged and unplugged" individuals, and would like to tell you more about those individuals and the projects/cool companies they are working on.

So stayed tuned. The show will go on

This mutlifunctional credit card of the future is very nifty- Measuring 54X85.6 mm the device will boast a video phone, bulit in program that displays discounts, remote control for any device, GPD system and even gaming device with network support. And it will use biometric fingerprint technology to authorize for users before making payments, opening a car door etc.

You know you travel a lot when

1) your hand bag/purse has more cables / chargers and other tech paraphenalia then lipsticks.

BTW- could the manufacturers finally start to use universal power supply plug in?
Right now my carry-on has a laptop charger, a digital camera charger, a Treo charger and since I am using Apple Power Mac also the Laptop to Display cable, firewire cable to connect digital camera to my laptop and electricity converters since I also travel a lot internationally.

2) you are asleep the moment you settle in your seat and long before the plane even takes off - which always starts admiration comments from my fellow passengers " Amazing, obviously you can pretty quickly relax on the plane while 50% of passengers are stressing just for take off"

No, it is called- using every possible moment to catch up on sleep - especially on red eye flights :)

3) You know exactly where to park your car to minimize your time to get to check-in/ gate

4) The check in agents and/or security agents start to recognize you and greet you by your first name

5) You getting closer to stoically accept flight delays, crying babies on the flight and even the jetways people dissapearing exactly when your plane landed and is stranded in front the gate.

6) The airport three letter codes become your 5th language :)

Airplane pilots - unplugged

I was just booking my airplane tickets to Boston using Mobissimo my favorite travel search engine, of course.

While I was waiting for the flight confirmation, I went to YouTube doing some research and found this hilarious video. It is actually an ad for xbox.

I can't help thinking if any one had an experience with pilots attempting to "jazz up" gate departure or takeoff :)

International calls at local cost

My family and friends spread on five continents will finally be happy- the cost of our international mobile to mobile calls is going to decrease finally thanks to Rebtel.

Here is how it works: Get local Rebtel numbers for your global friends, and give your global friends local Rebtel numbers for you. Then you can call each other as often as you like, for as long as you want, at the cost of a local call plus a $1 USD/week service fee. Good news is that we’ll only charge you for the weeks you use the service.

Given the amount of my last mobile phone bill- I am willing to give Rebtel a try.
